Who is Creaky Nora?

Creaky Nora is the name we’ve given our resident Kikimora.

Kikimora [kee-kee-mohr-uh] (noun)

noun, plural ki·k·mor·a [kee-kee-mohr-uh]

1.  A Slavic mythical creature who resides behind the kitchen stove.

2.  A cantankerous shape-shifter, often appearing with a chicken’s  beak

3.  The embodiment, personification, or life-spirit of the house and                  hen-cote (chicken coop);

A folkloric reminder

to respect

one’s surroundings and one’s flock

as well as one’s own

role among them.

The Kikimora can be a real terror if neglected, but if all is well in the home and one remembers to leave her a few crumbs in the corner, she creeps out in the night to help with the spinning (on her creaky wheel) and look after the hens in their cote.

We keep a very happy (and creaky) old home with just enough crumbs in the corners. Our hens are more than content, so we like to think our kikimora must be very happy indeed.

Wait . . . do you really believe a magical creature lives behind your stove???

-No. (but don't tell her that)

Who are we, really?

I'm Lori Jayne, a former freelance illustrator, and Creaky Nora Farm is my mom-owned, small farm/business. My family and I sell colorful eggs laid by happy, well tended hens; natural fiber, second-hand clothes & goods; and hand-made natural treasures.

We Believe in being gentle to one another and our surroundings, thoughtful in our choices, embracing simple joys, and the importance of everyday beauty.

We Do   our best to avoid non-biodegradable materials. We re-use packaging whenever possible and/or use home-compostable materials. We chose natural fibers and materials and we embrace second-hand/upcycling to avoid wastefulness and embrace creativity. We use organic practices.

We Try    to keep in mind our beautiful, tiny, brief role on this beautiful spinning planet–and those who will come after us. We think we should leave little behind that cannot return to the earth. No one is perfect (and no one should be). But there is beauty in the trying. We just hope we can have a small role in making your one wild and precious life a little closer to what your heart planned for you.
